Beds allow the player to skip to the next dawn and will show the world slowly fading away. In SMP, this will only happen when all players sleep. In another later update, the last bed the player slept in will serve as the player's respawn point the next time they die. The item was added in the 1.3 Update [1][2][3] Like some other blocks, the bed can't be placed on leaves, glass or snow. However, on fast graphics, beds CAN be placed on leaves. You can also create a "floating bed" if you destroy the blocks beneath the bed. "Half beds" can be created by placing a cactus on the ground, and then placing a bed next to it. This method is similar to the technique used when creating half doors.

  • The bed is 1m*0.7m*2m and you can not walk onto it.
  • Trying to use it during the day, will give you a message saying "You can only sleep at night." This is the 2nd message to be displayed in Beta Single Player - the other is "Screenshot saved as ..."
  • Breaking the blocks under the bed will not destroy it.
  • Because of this, it's possible to put beds over each other like with fences.
  • Beds are not stackable in the inventory.
  • Beds cannot be placed on glass, ice, snow, or on the leaves of trees.
  • Beds will always have the foot-end towards the player when placed.
  • You can use any colored wool to make a bed. However, the bed will always be red.
  • You can't sleep while being attacked.
  • Sleeping in a bed will not affect Smelting.
  • Sleeping will not cause dropped objects to disappear.
  • When breaking it will light up the color.
  • If a mob is within proximity of the bed and has access to it, you will be awakened with the mob standing next to you. There appears to be a slight delay before the mob attacks you giving you time to get the first blow.
  • You can't place a bed underwater. However, you can place it in a dry area and then let water flow over it (you can't sleep in it, though; it will say "You can only sleep at night").
  • You can not sleep in a bed if a chest is next to it. You can if there is a chest at the foot or head of the bed though.
  • You cannot sleep in the Nether. Trying to do so will make the "You can only sleep at night" text appear.
  • You can sleep with a block over your bed, you will get stuck though.
  • Sneaking will not prevent you from falling off the bed.
  • If you go to sleep in third-person, you will go back to first-person sleeping, but will awake in third-person.

The bed was added in Minecraft release Beta 1.3 [4]

The bed may only be used during the night, and when used you automatically go to the next day unless there is a possible way for a hostile mob to get to the bed's location. In that case, the player will wake up with a mob nearby and no time will have passed.

Trivia

  • When 1.3 was first released, every world generated started with a full stack of torches, a diamond pick, axe and shovel and 64 beds, separated into 1 and a stack of 63. This was later confirmed to be due to the debug item spawning code still being in place and was removed. [5]
  • If the player has a skin applied, sleeping will reset their skin to the default skin. (Confirmation?)
  • Time doesn't actually pass when you sleep, the game just sets the time to morning (This means entities such as mobs stay, and furnaces don't smelt as though you waited the whole night)
  • Even though it works with every color of wool, the bed will still be red.
  • Though only occurring in certain instances, when all the players in an SMP server attempt to sleep, a certain mob will spawn at the foot of the bed irrespective of the lighting level of the environment.
  • If the bed is surrounded on all sides by blocks, the player will not be able to sleep as a warning message appears saying that the bed is occupied, denying the player access to the bed. (Confirmation?)
  • If you are using a texture pack, you will not be able to make a bed.
