The debug screen is a feature which allows a player to view elements of the game like coordinates, Biome, etc. It is accessed by pressing the key, which can also be used to do certain actions, like reloading Chunks.
The debug screen was in the Indev version of Minecraft. However, it was in the options as a toggle on/off.
