An End Portal Frame is a block found in Strongholds which are arranged in a 12 block ring pattern over a pool of Lava. This arrangement of blocks makes up an End Portal, which players can use to reach The End.

Overview

Some of the frame blocks will already have an Eye of Ender inserted into them, while others will be empty. Once each of the 12 End Portal Frame blocks contain an Eye of Ender, an End Portal will open and connect to The End. Eyes of Ender can be obtained by crafting them from Ender Pearls and Blaze Powder. An Eye of Ender can be inserted into a frame by holding the eye in your hand, and "using" it on the frame block.

Entering The End is a one way trip, and a player can only return to The Nether or the Overworld via death in The End or by defeating an Ender Dragon.

Trivia

  • The End Portal Frame can only be destroyed in Creative mode. Before 1.4, The only way to obtain an End Portal Frame was through the use of hacking or modding. Ever since 1.4, End Portal Frames have been added to the creative menu.
  • Strangely, breaking an End Portal Frame makes the same sound of a Glass block breaking.
  • End Portal Frame are slightly larger than Slabs.
  • End Portals have End Stone on the bottom.
