A Note Block being triggered and playing a note.

Note Blocks were released on 13 January 2011 for the Beta release 1.2. Theys can be crafted by placing 8 planks surrounding a 3x3 crafting table with redstone in the center.

Note blocks play a note when hit or when a redstone current passes through them. Right clicking increases the note pitch up a half step, with a total of two full octaves being available to play. After reaching high C, right clicking again resets it to low C, as does breaking the block and picking it back up. Redstone current only causes the note to play once, even if it is a continuous current. A Note block must have a block of air above it to play a sound.

Research must be done on ways to use redstone to play actual songs in sync, if that is possible.

Double inverters can be used to create a delay between notes being played.

A Note Block placed on glass, stone, cobblestone, wood or dirt will play a different sound, or 'instrument'. Here is the list.

Block type Instrument
Glass Sticks
Stone/Cobblestone/Obsidian Ordinary drum
Wood Blocks Bass guitar
Sand/Gravel Snare drum
Dirt/Air/Other Piano
