Cake is a solid block introduced in Beta 1.2 with the special ability to be used for healing multiple times, appearing as a brown base topped with white frosting and red square dots. Cake cannot be eaten while being held - it must be placed on a suitable surface as a block. Slices are removed each time the cake is used. Breaking the cake block or the block underneath it will destroy the cake and not return anything.

Cake heals Template:LifeHearts (1.5 hearts) every use, and may be used up to six times for a total of Template:LifeHearts (9 hearts). If the player is already at full health, no cake will be consumed.

Origin

Notch stated if Minecraft won the 2010 Indie of the Year Awards, he would add cake to Minecraft. (It goes without saying that Minecraft garnered the award.)

Advantages

  • 9 hearts are healed per cake, yet only 1.5 hearts are restored per use. This is a cumulative healing power second only to a Golden Apple with the efficiency of bread!
  • Since cakes are placed on a flat surface and can be used repeatedly, several people can share one cake in SMP.
  • If there is an area where you know you will do a lot of fighting in, you can place some cakes there beforehand and use them while fighting without having to switch items.

Disadvantages

  • Cake requires several different items to craft - sugar,  wheat,  eggs, and three buckets of milk. As such, it takes some time to make a cake.
  • If you only eat part of a cake, you'll have to come back to that exact spot to eat the rest of it later on.

Trivia

  • Cake is slightly less than half a block tall (7/16 of a block), and does not make for a very good staircase.
  • When you hold a cake in your hand, it appears as though the cake is an item. However, the image for the cake while it is your hand is found in the terrain.png and the items.png file.
  • When cake is placed on ice, walking on the cake will let you slip and slide as if you were just standing on the ice.
  • Cake, unlike most other blocks, will not prevent chests from opening beneath it.
  • It is possible to encounter a glitch that allows you to place cake on top of cake. Eating the lower cake completely will cause the upper cake to disappear, same as mining out the block a cake is sitting on.
  • Placing cake on a half-block will cause it to 'levitate' as if it had been placed on a normal block.
