A Jukebox is an interactive block used to play Music Discs. It was added in Alpha 1.0.14 on July 30, 2010.

Mechanics

If a player interacts with a jukebox while a music disc is held in their hand, the disc is placed into the machine, and the music corresponding to that disc begins playing. Interacting with the jukebox again will stop the music and eject the disc. Music discs will only play its song once completely before they must be ejected and re-inserted. Sounds from the jukebox travel roughly around 75 blocks, but the distance is different vertically.

Jukeboxes can be smelted, which will yield 1.5 items per jukebox. However, this is somewhat wasteful as the Wood Planks and Diamond used to build jukeboxes are far more valuable than other furnace fuel sources.

Source

Music Discs can be obtained as a drop when a Creeper is killed by a Skeleton. They can also be found inside of Dungeon Chests.

Trivia

  • It is possible to place torches on top of Jukeboxes.
  • Jukeboxes cannot be moved by pistons.
  • The tutorial world in Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition and the Wii U Edition contains a Jukebox and all the music discs in the game. Most of the discs are hidden, but the jukebox and one of the disks are located in a chest close to where the player starts.
  • The fact that a Diamond is used to craft a Jukebox is likely a reference to how phonographs often have diamond-tipped needles.
  • There are currently 12 different types of music discs that can be played in a jukebox each with their own unique song or sound effects.
