The Ocean, also known as the Sea, is one of the largest biomes in Minecraft, as around 60% of the Overworld is covered in ocean. There are types: the regular ocean and Deep Ocean.

Both Normal Oceans and Deep Oceans are home to squids, making them a good hunting ground for ink sacs, as long as one is able to grab the ink sacs safely.

Deep Oceans are the places where Ocean Monuments will spawn, also making it the natural habitat of the guardians and elder guardians.

Oceans are possibly one of the most inhospitable places in the Overworld. Masked by the lack of most Mobs is the risk of drowning if attempting to dive deep under without protection, or starving to death whilst trying to swim large distances through the Ocean, and also getting attacked by passing guardians.

A boat is the best mode of transportation whilst traversing this harsh biome since it increases a player's speed through it, it saves a player's energy (thus slowing his/her hunger loss), and decreases the chance of getting hurt by guardians.

It is possible for part of an Ocean to freeze over if it is part of a snowy biome, such as a Snowy Taiga, or Snow Plains.

Oceans are a good place for fishing since there is nearly no risk of the fishing rod digging into any blocks while doing so.

If a player can get the right resources, Oceans can be a good place to live, whether it is on an Island, ship-like structure or even under the water since one can possibly isolate themselves nearly completely from monsters (as long as it is well lit) or even players. Fish and Salmon could be some of the main sources of sustenance, and crops can be grown on a hydroponic farm of sorts.

A Deep Ocean is one of the worst places for an unsuspecting player to surface into because of the depth of the ocean. A player could suffer or die from drowning damage if they do not consume a Potion of Waterbreathing or have a Respiration-enchanted helmet.

If a player is aiming to do a spot of diving under the ocean, for gathering sand or clay, or raiding Ocean Monuments, it would be wise to create Potions Of Waterbreathing, and Armor with the Respiration, Aqua Affinity, and Depth Strider Enchantments. The Potions Of Waterbreathing and Respiration enchantments will increase the time players can spend under the water, while Aqua Affinity will help a player mine blocks faster under the water. Pufferfish can be gained easily by fishing in the ocean, and they are the ingredients required for making Potions Of Waterbreathing. If a player combines all of these and a Potion of Night Vision, walking under the sea is like walking on land.
