Beds allow the player to skip to the next dawn. In SMP, this will only happen when all players sleep. Beds were added in Beta 1.3 [1]. In a future update, the last bed the player slept in will serve as the player's respawn point the next time they die. Beds cannot be destroyed by fire.

Placement

Beds, unlike typical blocks, take up two blocks of space. Basic placement requires at least this much space away from the player's facing direction. Like some other blocks, beds can not be placed on glass or snow but can be placed on leaves if graphics are set to "Fast". It is also possible to create a "floating bed" if the blocks underneath the bed are destroyed. This allows beds placed over each other like with fences. When placed, the foot will face toward the user. Two or more beds can be placed next to each other, effectively allowing double beds.

Beds cannot be placed underwater. They can be placed in a dry area and then flooded, however using them will result in the "You can only sleep at night" message. Chests next to the bed will render it unusable unless it is at the foot or head of the bed. In order for the bed to be useful, it must have enough light on and around it to prevent hostile mob attacks during sleep.

Behavior

Beds are used by right-clicking on them during night time. Attempting to use it during the day will result in a "You can only sleep at night." message, which also appears when attempting to use beds in the Nether. When used, the player is positioned in the bed and their view slowly fades to gray. After this transition, the player wakes up at dawn. However, if a hostile mob is within proximity of the bed and has access to it, you will be awakened with the hostile mob standing next to you. There appears to be a slight delay before the mob attacks you giving you time to get the first blow.

Sleeping, while skipping night time, does not accelerate other events such as the decay of dropped items, crop growth or smelting.

Crafting

Note: You can use any colored wool, you can even use multiple colors of wool, however, the bed will remain red.

Notes

  • When pressing the Inventory key quickly before entering your bed, the player will be lying flat down on its back in the player picture.
Bedbug
  • Sneaking while in your bed will show you the player in first person view (from inside the head)
  • If the bed is surrounded on all sides by blocks, the player will not be able to sleep as a message appears saying "You can only sleep at night", denying the player access to the bed.
  • When walked on, beds make a sound like stone, suggesting that they are uncomfortable.
  • In SMP, the player is given the option to "Leave Bed" or use chat to continue communicating.
  • Attempting to enter a bed from the foot will result in a message saying "You can only sleep at night".
  • Technically your player is bigger than the bed.
  • Using a bed in a room with a low ceiling can result in the player waking up with their head stuck, causing them to suffocate unless they can escape.
  • Saving in a bed then continuing the save causes the player to fall through the floor and makes the bed "occupied", simply destroy and replace your bed to work around this bug.
  • You may not sleep while F8 is toggled.
  • Hitting the bed will cause it to "glow". This does not affect the light level.
  • In SMP, if you try to sleep in an occupied bed you will get a message saying "This bed is occupied"
  • Beds can be stacked on top of each other, forming a "Bunk bed". To do so, build a temporary floor where the top bed is going to go, place the bed, delete the floor from underneath it, and continue doing so, downwards, until you meet the ground. It is still possible to sleep in any of the beds, but it is possible to experience an "eternal sleeping" bug (although this can easily be resolved by quitting and reloading). This method is similar to stacking fences.
  • If there is 1 block of space between the bottom of the bed and the ceiling, you will suffocate, but only upon waking.
  • It does not appear to use the smooth lighting, If you place a torch by one end, you will notice the lighting between both ends is not smoothed.
  • Placing a bed next to cactus in SMP creates a detached headrest. This can be used to create heart shaped beds and benches.
  • Monsters, like the Zombie, will appear around your bed as soon as the screen fades out, like a monster is coming out from under the bed.
